WORLD CUP FINAL REFEREE
With all the officiating issues that have been the main story line of this World Cup, all eyes will be on the man in the middle, England's Howard Webb. He's a professional referee, so things should be better, we hope. He also officiated the EURO 2008 final, and I don't remember any insane decisions from that game that Spain won. Maybe he's they're good luck charm. It's too bad they chose someone who most soccer people feel is trustworthy for such a responsibility. With that in mind, I would like to ask you who would be appropriate as the head referee for the final between the Netherlands and Spain on July 11?

LeBRON or LeDOUCHE?
ESPN gives King James his court, and he stabs his hometown in the back and joins the party on South Beach in FLA with Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh to play for the Miami Heat. I really didn't care where he went, although going to the Clippers would have made a more interesting story to me. He's not coming to Chicago to resurrect the Bulls' championship dreams either. Cleveland fans are already burning his jerseys. This special for his "Decision" was a waste of video and electricity, and, most of all, TIME! Did we need to devote so much time to one jackass? He was going to make a decision sometime. Make your decision, somebody reports it, and you have your press conference at the signing. This crap is ridiculous! ESPN has turned into MTV for sports. More empty meaningless style than substance.

USA IN SWEET 16
Landon Donovan, the best soccer player this country has ever produced, gets the goal to put the US through to the Round of 16 at World Cup 2010 in South Africa. Former Fire coach Bob Bradley had to deal with another goal disallowed by mistake by the officials, but his guys came through in stoppage time with a true team effort throughout the game and on the winning goal in minute 91. Goalkeeper Tim Howard threw to Donovan on the run. He dished to Jozy Altidore to the right of the penalty area, and Altidore crossed to Clint Dempsey whose shot was smothered by the Algerian goalie only to have his own defender kick him in the head and have the ball pop out to Donovan, who put the bulge in the old onion bag as ESPN's Tommy Smyth would say it. What a stressful yet beautiful Wednesday morning. On to the final 16 to play Ghana on Saturday!

ROD'S DAY IN COURT
Disgraced Democrat former IL Governer Rod Blagojevich begins his journey through the U.S. Justice System, and hopefully, through the wringer. He is up on so many chargers that I lost count. He claims his innocence and wants all the tapes played as he says on his excruciatingly self-serving radio show on WLS every Sunday afternoon. In honor of what we already know is on those tapes, I have to ask you a simple question.

LET THEM PLAY!
In case you haven't heard, Highland Park High School Superindendent George Fornero has decided that the girls' basketball team will not be allowed to participate in a tournament in Arizona in December due to his objections to the new Arizona Illegal Immigration law that hasn't even yet taken effect. I decided to send him and his assistnat Suzan Hebson an e-mail voicing my disgust at their foolish decision, and it reads as follows:
You, Mr. Fornero, and your fellow leftist and assistant superintendent Suzan Hebson should be ashamed of your decision to not allow the girls' basketball team at Highland Park H.S. to participate in a holiday tournament in Arizona because of your political views. You've not only disappointed the girls, who have worked hard to be a good team this past season and raise money for their trip, but you've made your school and the entire state of Illinois the laughing stock of the country. The silliness of governments boycotting Arizona is bad enough, but those are politicians doing what politicians do: Posture. You used these girls to make a political point of your own. Park your pride and your liberal views for a minute and think of the girls on the team and their families and do the right thing. I will call you out on my radio show this Sunday morning, so feel free to tune in, and you're more than welcome to defend your indefensible decision. I hope you'll change your decision. Sincerely,

Adding to this silliness are the others who are calling for boycotts, especially of sporting events held in Arizona. Many have called for the 2011 MLB All-Star Game to be moved from Phoenix, the NBA Suns wore jerseys with the bad translation of "Los Suns" on the front as the team owner's protest of the law. Some people protested outside Wrigley Field when the Arizona Diamondbacks played the Cubs a couple weeks ago, and now some of those people want the Cubs to move their spring training site out of the state. Don't the Cubs have enough problems? They haven't won diddly in over 100 years, their stadium is so decrepit that they're promoting the fact that they have 20th Century bathrooms, and they stink again this year. The site of their spring training camp and the immigration laws of that state are the least of their concerns.

I just wanted to get used to saying that for when May 1, replaces July 4,
as a national holiday. Instead of barbecuing and fireworks, we could have a military parade of hybrid tanks loaded with recycled artillary that we have promised to never use against any and all rogue dictators. Gotta love utopia.

JAN BREWER: AMERICAN HERO
Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer signed a border security bill into law that nobody at the federal level had the guts to even consider. It allows local law enforcement to inquire about someone's status after they've been pulled over or stopped by the police for some violation and if there is any indication that the person may not have legal status in this country during that stop. Seems simple enough, doesn't it? Read the full law's text here. It's actually the law for people to have their proof of status according to the Immigrants Handbook that you can read for yourself right here.
As a permanent resident, it is your responsibility to:
• Obey all federal, state, and local laws.
• Pay federal, state, and local income taxes.
• Register with the Selective Service if you are a male between ages 18 and 26.
• Maintain your immigration status.
• Carry proof of your permanent resident status at all times.
• Change your address with the Department of Homeland Security within 10 days of your move.
What was that second to last thing that I put in red? Really? You have to do that? Why would you need proof of status if no one is allowed to check? Hmmmm. Makes you wonder, doesn't it? Anyway, the only reason Arizona has enacted this law is because the Federal Government hasn't done its job for decades. The Reagan amnesty in 1986 was supposed to be a reset of the situation. Legalize those already here and then start enforcing the laws so we won't have a repeat situation. Since then, we've had the same issues only on steroids. It's nice to see the Arizona Legislature and Gov. Brewer have the cojones to do what the Feds refuse to do. Well done, Madam Governor!

DRAFT DAY!
Thursday night is the first time that the NFL's college draft will begin in prime time. Call for a pizza, make some popcorn, and cool the beer for the great event. Wait a minute!? This crap is on prime time? you mean I have to see that Jets fan with the airplane on his head during dinner? No thanks! I don't normally watch the draft anyhow, so the time that it's on really doesn't affect me. Prime time just seems to be an odd choice. I wonder if there will be any entertainment this year during the first night. Maybe in the future the whole thing will be on prime time, and the last pick known as "Mr. Irrelevant" will win a chance to host a late-night talk show just to be replaced by Jay Leno 3 months later. I'm calling the NFL right now! Enjoy seeing who will be the next Akili Smith or Ryan Leaf.

TIGER'S BACK!
Golf's most marketable player has returned for the game's most prestigious tournament this week. It began with a pedestrian press conference, but will it end with Tiger Woods in a green jacket or a straight jacket? Does it matter? Do you care? I don't. All I know is that his wife Elin won't be there, so at least he should be safe from any nine irons unless Judge Smails loses his grip on 18.
